Give me an Old Song

Give me an old song
One I can la-la to or hum,
With a chorus to sing along
Like those sung by my Mum.

‘She’s my sweetheart’,
‘Come over the garden wall’,
‘Roll out the barrel’;
Proper songs all.

Old songs set toes tapping
Like ‘Macnamara’s Band’,
‘Don’t dilly dally’, or
‘Let’s all go down the Strand’.

Modern Music is just noise
A rhythmic jangling din.
Give me, ‘Tiptoe through the tulips’,
Or ‘When the saints go marching in’.

To end my wistful hankering
I’ll don a Yorkshire hat,
and give a tuneful rendering,
Of, ‘On Ilkly Moor bah tat’.
