The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Reading Group met on Wednesday 3rd May 2016 to discuss ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern.

The opinions varied from, ‘It was the best fairy tale I’ve ever read’ to ‘Well I got through it but I didn’t really understand it. How can she change the colour of her dress, just like that?’

The book is a fantasy where two young children a boy, Marco, and a girl, Celia, are taught magic by old protagonists. When they become adults they have no choice but to enter into competition with each other, the arena being the Night Circus. Wonder upon wonder is created and it seems they are as powerful as each other. It is further complicated by them falling in love. Tension mounts because only one can win and the other must perish in the attempt.

The general opinion was that the book was too long and we gave it three stars out of five.

The group are now reading, ‘The Husband’s Secret’ by Liane Moriarty.
